Starting a Vegetable Garden

Growing vegetables are easier than you think, and having fresh produce throughout the summer is a real treat. To get started with your vegetable garden, find a spot that gets plenty of sun… at least 6 to 8 hours a day.

When you find the right location in your yard just make sure you don’t start too big. A smaller garden requires less work. The secret is not to be too ambitious until you know how much you can realistically handle.

Garden soil feeds your plants so make sure that your soil contains what vegetables love: plenty of organic material. Before planting make sure your garden area is well tilled free of dirt lumps and then smoothed. Smooth flat soil helps you get an accurate planting depth.

When planning your garden for the first time, stick to easy-to-grow vegetables and leave the more exotic vegetables for another year when you’ve had more experience. Some of the easiest to grow vegetables are beans beets carrots lettuce peas radishes and carrots.

The easiest thing to do is follow the advice on the seed packets of the vegetables you’re growing. You’ll notice that some seeds are small and others like beans are pretty big. A rule of thumb is that the right depth to plant a seed is two to three times its diameter.

Gardens will grow very well using organic principles as long as the soil is rich and full of organic materials. If you choose to fertilize however a formulation like 5 10 5 10 10 10 or 12 12 12 works best.

One last word even expert gardeners will have the occasional failure. Don’t be frustrated if your carrots don’t germinate or your lettuce wilts… there will be other vegetables in your garden that thrive.

And if you’re in doubt as to how to plant or look after your vegetables, there is plenty of free advice from the experts at your local Canadian Tire Garden Center.
